History of Athens

The Athens 1896 Olympic Games, officially known as Games of the I Olympiad, were held in Athens, Greece, between 6 and April 15, 1896. 241 athletes participated in male-female participation, there were fourteen countries who competed in 43 competitions in nine sports. They were the first Olympics of the modern era. 
1896 Olympic Games were recognized as a great success. Had the largest international participation in a sporting event to date. Panathinaiko Stadium, which was the first major stage of the modern world, was surpassed its capacity with the largest crowd that had gathered ever to see a sporting event.
